Nutella

How ethical and sustainable is Nutella?

Nutella is included in The Good Shopping Guide’s Jam and spreads Ethical Ratings Table. Nutella has yet to meet our ethical standards, but we believe that in the future, the brand will make the necessary changes to function as a more ethical organisation. Nutella might increase consumer trust by applying for Ethical Accreditation, which would include a more complete examination and suggestions for ethical development.

Are you interested in seeing how Nutella rates against other brands within the Ethical Jams and Spreads sector? Visit the Jams and Spreads Ethical Ratings Table. From The Good Shopping Guide’s Ratings Tables, you can learn more about the criteria that our top-rated brands have fulfilled.

What does Nutella do?

Nutella was first produced in 1946 in Turin by Pietro Ferrero who at the time was a pastry maker. Cocoa was extremely scarce at this time and Nutella was created using hazelnuts, sugar and only a small amount of the rare cocoa as an alternative. Nutella is a chocolate and hazelnut flavoured spread that is now sold in 160 countries worldwide. The chocolate spread brand is a part of the Ferrero group.

For which criteria does Nutella perform poorly?

Nutella received a low rating due to its parent company. The areas that Nutella needs to address are the accessibility of organic items and accessibility of fair trade products. The Ferrero Group received a middle rating for Political Donations as over our threshold was donated in recent election cycles.

Past Criticisms of Nutella’s ethical record

Nutella faced criticism as Ferrero was involved in a watchdog case as a complaint was filed in regards to recent E. Coli and Salmonella outbreaks.

In what areas does Nutella score well for its ethics?

Nutella receives a high score for its Vegetarian Society accreditation and its Environmental Report. Ferrero Group has a sustainability report including targets on GHG emissions and plastic packaging as well as other evidence of progress.

How can Nutella improve its ethical rating?

The Ethical rating of a brand is divided into three categories by The Good Shopping Guide: the Environment, People and Animals. Find out more about how we rate.

Nutella may improve its rating and fulfil our fundamental ethical requirements by ceasing all Political Donations and releasing a detailed GMO policy relating to all product ingredients.
