A confectionary store called “Bayldon and Berry” in Bootham Bar, York, employed Joseph Terry in 1823, more than a century before the first chocolate orange was ever sold. Two years later, he and the new owner George Berry helped the company change its name to Terry & Berry. When Berry departed the company in 1828, the name was changed once more to “Joseph Terry and Company.” When Joseph Terry passed away in 1850, his sons and then his grandchildren and great-grandchildren received the business.

In York, England, in 1932, the renowned Chocolate Orange was first offered for sale. It was first known as the “Dessert Chocolate Orange” and came in a little box similar to the one used now. Terry’s Chocolate Apple was replaced by Terry’s Chocolate Orange, which was created in 1926, just six years earlier. The Chocolate Apple had a similar appearance to the Chocolate Orange, but its flavour was apple-flavored chocolate.
