Budget Insurance

How ethical and sustainable is Budget Insurance?

The Good Shopping Guide’s Ethical Insurance Ratings Table includes Budget Insurance. This insurance provider has yet to fulfil our ethical criteria, but we hope that the brand will make changes in the future to function as a more ethical insurance company. Budget Insurance would be able to boost customer confidence and acquire exact ethical suggestions by requesting Ethical Accreditation.

The Good Shopping Guide to Ethical Insurance Companies has more information on the importance of ethical insurance. Then, in our Ethical Insurance Rating Table, compare it to other insurance providers to see how insurance brands rank for the ethical issues you care most about.

What does Budget Insurance do?

Budget Insurance offers a range of insurance policies including home insurance and car insurance. It is a UK insurance intermediary owned by BLG group. It was established in 1992 and in 1997 underwent a transformation to become an insurance distributor and acquired several insurance intermediary brands.

For which criteria does Budget Insurance perform poorly?

Despite the progress made, Budget Insurance receives a low rating for its Environmental Report and its Carbon Disclosure & Reduction Targets. Budget Insurance’s parent company, BGL Group has a CSR page that mentions reducing emissions and using renewable energy but this information is very vague and includes no clear targets or statistics; for a company of this size,  better accountability is expected.

Past Criticisms of Budget Insurance’s ethical record

A company owned by BGL, Compare The Market, was fined for breaches of competition law over its ‘most favoured nation’ clauses on home insurance providers selling through its platform. This reflects badly on Budget Insurance’s parent company, but is not a directly the fault of this insurance brand, therefore it receives a middle rating.

In what areas does Budget Insurance score well for its ethics?

The brand received no criticisms for Environmental Destruction, Irresponsible Lending and has not been found to have made any Political Donations. Therefore, Budget Insurance receives a high rating for all of these areas.

How can Budget Insurance improve its ethical rating?

By improving its Enviromental Report to include more specific goals and targets, Budget Insurance could improve its Good Shopping Guide Ethical Rating. Budget Insurance could apply for Ethical Accreditation to receive more specific advice on how to develop and strive to be one of the best, and most ethical insurance companies.

The Good Shopping Guide divides a brand’s Ethical Rating into three categories: the Environment, People, and Animals. Find more on how we rate brand for their ethics here.
